Marie’s Café, 30 Years in Bus

By Michele Carlson

In today‘s difficult economy, it is refreshing to find a familiar café with affordable prices where the entire family can enjoy a good home cooked meal and quality conversation. Marie‘s Café, located in Boulder, is celebrating it‘s 30thyear in business. Quite a feat in a town known for an always evolving restaurant scene.

Marie‘s was opened in 1979 Dolly and Rudy Barciak. They wanted to share the comfort foods of Slovak Republic (Former Czechoslovakia) with the local Colorado community. Mr. Barciak has since passed on, and the staff runs as a family. One of the chefs, Andrej (Mr. and Mrs. Barciak‘s son), ensures that his family recipes are served up fresh each day. Many patrons are grown children of original patrons who go out into their lives but eventually bring their own children back home to Marie‘s.

Marie‘s is a special, friendly down-home restaurant where all are welcome and severed respectfully, promptly, and with care. The prices are affordable enough for a family of four to enjoy a decent meal out or for starving college students to actually afford a nutritious meal. Not to mention the affluent who enjoy dining there for the caring service and conversation that each waitress gives each customer, talking to most on a first name basis.

On any given morning, you can find a wide assortment of people, all enjoying a fresh cup of coffee, a well cooked hearty breakfast, and reading the newspaper or talking with friends about everything from local gossip to international news. The light airy restaurant allows you to watch your food being made, the old fashioned way. It‘s decorated in a traditionally European style with hand-painted plates, cups, and paintings depicting elegant European life and floral.

Marie‘s also has outdoor seating with a great view of the mountains. They are open only for breakfast and lunch, so be sure to check out this Boulder hidden treasure, located on Broadway, just a few blocks north of Pearl street. Be sure to visit this Boulder restaurant to enjoy a handmade fresh Kolacek (a large sweet pastry) and enjoy how community connects in this coffee shop.
